Discover “photography as art.” It begins with a blank canvas of film/file on which, with detailed planning and logistical considerations that is meticulous and at times painstaking, the complete essence of a pre-visualized imagined concept is creatively constructed and staged, using only a camera, optics, and light to make a photograph. Like a sculptor with chisel and stone, only in this case the process ends when pressing the shutter button.
This series of Reflection and Refraction photographs shows how our eyes, never static and always scanning-darting, see a subject…while, at the same time, revealing the variety of ways a subject can be seen, which in this series is a means to convey the complexity of the female gender. She is a kaleidoscope vision, multifaceted, not completely knowable or perfectly delineated vision… fragmented, yet recognizable. A parallel view is that we as human beings have no single essence.
Ava is from Florida, and Florida has a Fountain of Youth. Ava at 73 has been blessed by it. Here she is, like many other women she has kept herself vibrant. Living does however leave its scars, and this series explores how best show her natural physical beauty through the reality of pure photography.
